Scholar-Shop for Books

Are you curious about the breathtaking discovery that Dr. Kate Philo and her team made in the Artic? Who are the Brothers Boswell? What novel, written by a doctor, is set on the coast of Maine and weaves together the lives of three struggling people? Why do real women eat beef?

Discover the answers to these questions and meet award winning authors at the Stern Center’s first Scholar-Shop for books. This event benefits the Cynthia K. Hoehl Institute for Excellence within the Stern Center and promises lots of fun.

On Thursday, April 30th guests will have the opportunity to mingle with authors, and participate in a literary scavenger hunt and silent auction at the Shelburne Vineyard. The Cynthia K. Hoehl Institute for Excellence serves as an instructional and professional learning laboratory modeling best educational practices, awards grants to help underwrite professional learning opportunities, and reduces instructional fees for eligible families.

“I’m excited about this first-time event, which complements the Stern Center mission of helping all learners succeed,” said Laurie Caswell Burke, event organizer.

Two of the guest authors are Stern Center alums, Sean Plasse and Brian Till. Plasse self-published, The Brother’s Plad, for young adults who struggle with dyslexia. Till, now a medical student at the University of Vermont, published Conversations with Power just after graduating from college. He met Mikhail Gorbachev and former president Jimmy Carter in the process. Till and Plasse are grateful for the services they received at the Stern Center and the impact it had on their lives.

The Stern Center for Language and Learning is a nonprofit learning center dedicated to helping children and adults reach their academic, professional and social goals. We serve over 900 children and adults per year, including those with learning disabilities, dyslexia, language disorders, autism and learning style differences.

Renowned children’s book author, Katherine Paterson, and local award-winning author and co-owner of Flying Pig bookstore, Elizabeth Bluemle, will also be in attendance. Bring a book to be signed, enjoy wine by the glass, and nibble some delicious hor d’oeuvres and delectable chocolate from Bijou.

There are still a few tickets left, but they must be purchased in advance. Call Laurie at (802) 878-2332 for more information and to purchase tickets.
